What Is a Quiet Time? (And How to Actually Have One)

A quiet time is the single most common practice in evangelical Christianity — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's what it is, why it matters, and how to build one that lasts.

Ask a hundred Christians whether they have a "quiet time," and most will say yes, no, or something between guilt and aspiration. It's one of the most commonly recommended practices in evangelical Christianity. It's also one of the least defined.

Some people use the phrase to mean reading a devotional. Others mean journaling. Others mean sitting in silence. Some mean all three, done before coffee, preferably at 5 a.m.

The ambiguity matters, because what you think a quiet time is shapes whether you build one — and whether it actually forms you spiritually or just checks a box.

Where the Term Comes From

The phrase "quiet time" doesn't appear in Scripture. It's a 20th-century evangelical coinage for the practice of setting aside intentional, regular time for private devotion — Bible reading, prayer, and reflection. The practice itself has ancient roots: the desert fathers, the medieval hours, the Puritan habit of "closet prayer" all share the same basic instinct that regular, unhurried attention to God is not optional for spiritual growth.

The modern usage largely traces to the Navigators ministry, which formalized it as a daily discipline for new believers in the 1940s and 50s. Their approach — consistent time, consistent place, Scripture and prayer — shaped how millions of evangelicals think about personal devotion to this day.

What a Quiet Time Actually Is

Strip away the baggage, and a quiet time is simply this: a scheduled, protected block of time in which you attend to God rather than to everything else.

It doesn't have to be long. It doesn't have to be in the morning (though there are good arguments for starting the day this way). It doesn't require a particular format. What it requires is intentionality — you decide in advance that this time is for this purpose, and you protect it from the thousand other demands on your attention.

The three elements that most practices share:

  • Scripture. Reading the Bible — not skimming, not browsing, but reading with the intention of receiving. What is this text actually saying? What does it reveal about God? What does it ask of me?
  • Prayer. Speaking and listening. Bringing what you've just read into conversation with God — responding to what you received, asking for what you need, interceding for others.
  • Reflection. Pausing long enough for what you read and prayed to land. Journaling, silence, and meditation all serve this function. The goal is that something moves from your head to your heart.

The Most Common Mistakes

Treating it as information intake

Bible reading without prayerful attention becomes a reading program. You can finish the Bible in a year and be no more transformed than when you started. The goal of a quiet time isn't to cover material — it's to encounter God through the material. Slower reading, with more pausing and less quantity, is almost always better.

Making it contingent on emotion

Some mornings your quiet time will feel alive. Most mornings it will feel ordinary. Some mornings it will feel like nothing at all. The discipline is showing up regardless of how it feels — because spiritual formation happens through consistent practice, not peak experiences. A quiet time where you feel nothing and stay anyway is often more formative than one where you feel everything.

Perfectionism about the format

The ideal quiet time has a way of becoming the enemy of an actual quiet time. If your system requires a specific notebook, a specific Bible, a specific location, and 45 uninterrupted minutes, it will collapse the first time your life requires flexibility. A five-minute quiet time in a parking lot is better than a missed quiet time because you couldn't do the full version.

A Simple Starting Framework

If you're building the habit from scratch — or rebuilding after a long gap — start here:

  • Choose a time and place. Same time, same place, every day. Habit formation research is clear: context cues matter more than willpower. Attach your quiet time to something that already happens consistently (after coffee, before email, after the kids leave for school).
  • Start shorter than you think. Ten minutes done consistently beats forty minutes done sporadically. You can extend it as the habit solidifies.
  • Read a single passage. Not a chapter, not a chapter-a-day plan. One passage — a paragraph, a psalm, a short chapter — read slowly. Read it twice.
  • Respond in prayer. Talk to God about what you just read. Don't move immediately to a prayer list. Start with the text. "Lord, what you said here about ___... I need that. I struggle with that. Thank you for that."
  • Write something down. One sentence. What did you notice? What do you want to remember? Writing forces you to articulate what struck you — and articulation embeds it.

Using Sermons as the Text

One underused form of quiet time is returning to Sunday's sermon during the week. The pastor spent hours in a passage you heard for 35 minutes. You received maybe 40% of what was there. Going back to the scripture passage the sermon was based on — slowly, privately, days later — often surfaces things you couldn't hear on Sunday when you were also managing a squirming child or half-thinking about lunch.

This approach has the added benefit of continuity: your Sunday hearing and your weekday reading reinforce each other in a way that reading through an unrelated passage doesn't.
