 BEREA COLLEGE

Berea College is distinctive among institutions of higher learning. Founded in 1855, Berea was the first interracial and coeducational college in the South. Berea College:

• Charges no tuition, instead ensures every student receives the equivalent of a four-year, full tuition scholarship.
• Provides a high-quality education to students of great promise but limited financial resources.
• Requires all students to work at least 10 hours per week to earn money for their room, board, and books.
• Repeatedly is ranked as the top comprehensive college in the South for academics and for service learning.
• Offers rigorous undergraduate academic programs leading to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 28 fields.
• Meets its mission in contemporary ways by preparing students for 21st century citizenship in a complex, global society though initiatives in technology, international education, and sustainability and environmental studies.
• Maintains an inclusive Christian character, expressed in its motto "God has made of one blood all peoples of the Earth."
• Serves the Southern Appalachian region primarily, but draws students from all states in the U.S. and typically from more than 65 other countries, representing a rich diversity of colors, cultures, and faiths.

Investing in lives of great promise.

The Visitors Center at College Square, is the starting point for regularly-scheduled walking tours that provide an historical overview of Berea College. Covering three-quarters of a mile, these student-led tours are about fifty-minutes long and visit notable campus sites including the Frost Building (originally a Carnegie Library), Phelps Stokes Chapel (built by students in 1904–1906), and the Draper Building (the College’s largest classroom building rededicated in 2002 following a 14-month, $11 million, eco-friendly renovation), among others. Tours of the Student Crafts program also are offered highlighting broomcraft, weaving, woodcraft, and wrought iron production areas where students produce handmade items sold in the Boone Tavern Hotel Gift Shop and the Log House Craft Gallery. The Visitors Center at College Square features a theatre for watching historical videos of the College, and is located within a minute’s walk to Boone Tavern Hotel and the shops and galleries on College Square. www.berea.edu/visitorscenter/
