Berea College is
distinctive among institutions of higher learning. Founded in
1855, Berea was the first interracial and coeducational
college in the South. Berea College:
• Charges no
tuition, instead ensures every student receives the
equivalent of a four-year, full tuition scholarship.
• Provides a high-quality education to students of great
promise but limited financial resources.
• Requires all students to work at least 10 hours per week
to earn money for their room, board, and books.
• Repeatedly is ranked as the top comprehensive college in
the South for academics and for service learning.
• Offers rigorous undergraduate academic programs leading to
Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 28
fields.
• Meets its mission in contemporary ways by preparing
students for 21st century citizenship in a complex, global
society though initiatives in technology, international
education, and sustainability and environmental studies.

• Serves the Southern Appalachian region primarily, but
draws students from all states in the U.S. and typically
from more than 65 other countries, representing a rich

The Visitors Center at College
Square, is the starting point for
regularly-scheduled walking tours that provide an historical
overview of Berea College. Covering three-quarters of a mile,
these student-led tours are about fifty-minutes long and visit
notable campus sites including the Frost Building (originally
a Carnegie Library), Phelps Stokes Chapel (built by students
in 1904–1906), and the Draper Building (the College’s largest
classroom building rededicated in 2002 following a 14-month,
$11 million, eco-friendly renovation), among others. Tours of
the Student Crafts program also are offered highlighting
broomcraft, weaving, woodcraft, and wrought iron production
areas where students produce handmade items sold in the Boone
Tavern Hotel Gift Shop and the Log House Craft Gallery. The
Visitors Center at College Square features a theatre for
watching historical videos of the College, and is located
within a minute’s walk to Boone Tavern Hotel and the shops and
galleries on College Square.

The International Center
– The Francis and Louise Hutchins Center for
International Education at Berea College provides leadership
for implementing the College’s commitment to international
education. The International Center cultivates intercultural
understanding and serve as a resource providing excellent
educational opportunities for our community by coordinating
the enrollment of international students at Berea College as
well as Study Abroad experiences for the College’s students.

The Appalachian Center
- For more than one hundred years, Berea College has served
the people of Appalachia primarily through education and
through other appropriate services. The work of the
Appalachian Center stems from this commitment, providing
leadership to Berea’s Appalachian activities; stimulating
student and scholarly interest; coordinating outreach
programs; and serving as a source of information about the
Appalachian Region.
